Cosmopolitans were a drink that I drank a lot of in my mid to late twenties either at cocktail bars in Cardiff after work with my buddy, Laura, usually at Pica Pica which has now shut down or making them at home with a plastic shaker and serving them in Babycham glasses. I started getting classy pretty early on.
Obviously Sex And The City helped to popularise this drink, but I think it’s appeal comes from being served in a martini glass, and being more balanced than other drinks served in a similar receptacle; less tart than a daiquiri or margarita, lighter than a creamy alexander and less boozy than an actual martini, plus far more refined than anything frozen. There is also the added bonus of cranberry being good for your bladder functions and their rather attractive pink colour.
Here is the recipe I use:
- 1oz Citron Vodka (I used Absolut)
- 1oz Triple Sec or Cointreau (I used Triple Sec)
- 1oz Cranberry Juice
- Juice of 1 lime wedge
- Orange Peel Spritz
Add the first 4 ingredients to a shaker with ice and give it a good shake for 10-15 seconds. Fine strain in to a martini or coupette glass and then spritz the surface with the orange peel, setting fire to the oils if you are so inclined (it does add a different dynamic to the drink.)
I tend to up the cranberry slightly in my recipe, because I like and it and it tastes better to me, but you can always tweak to your taste.
Enjoy!
